Electrical Discharge Machining

Electric Discharge Machining (EDM) is a precision process that uses electrical discharges (sparks) to shape hard metal materials.

It involves a workpiece and an electrode, separated by a dielectric fluid. A high-frequency electrical current creates sparks that generate intense heat, causing localized melting and vaporization of the material. This eroded material is flushed away by the dielectric fluid, allowing for precise removal. There are two types: Sinker EDM, which creates intricate cavities with a shaped electrode, and Wire EDM, which cuts through the workpiece with a thin wire. EDM is ideal for machining complex shapes and hard materials, offering high accuracy and excellent surface finishes without mechanical stress. It is slower than conventional methods and limited to electrically conductive materials but is essential in aerospace, medical, tool and die making, and automotive industries for producing high-precision parts.
